Why the leaving cert won't impact your career in beauty

16/07/2021

Inspite of the Taoiseach’s claim that exams will go ahead “by hook or by crook” –the current Covid environment poses a huge measure of uncertainty for most leaving cert students who are due to be going to college this autumn.
In some respect, just knowing that the exams have in fact been cancelled could elicit a certain amount of relief. Nevertheless, the uncertainty of not knowing how this will play out from the point of view of securing a college place creates its own level of stress. This difficult situation is one shared by hundreds of students across Ireland.

On a positive note, this does not need to impact those of you out there who are looking to pursue a career in beauty.
We are constantly hearing of the inevitability of recession that will come fast on the heels of our exit from this period of lockdown. It is worth stating, however, that the Beauty industry has a good reputation for being able to weather the storm.

In the period following the 2008 recession, the sector experienced massive growth. Particularly in everyday treatments like eyecare, nails and skincare. These sectors had previously been considered luxuries...they are now very certainly considered to be every day ‘must haves’.

This has been partly due to the growth of blogging. Irish women are now much more savvy when it comes to skin care and beauty products thanks to the influence of people like Suzanne Jackson, Marissa Carter, the Skin Nerd to name just a few. The explosion in social media has completely reshaped the Beauty Industry. The growth seen here in Ireland over the first two decades of this century can only be set to go further as we follow hot on the heels of the American Market. Who knew beauty before Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Hudda Kattan?

So inspite of the warning of looming recession, the opportunities here in Ireland to develop a career in this dynamic industry are still incredibly positive. Better still, access to colleges is based on your enthusiasm and passion for the industry rather than on the success of your leaving cert results.

The important thing is that you embark on a course that gives you a credible qualification. The best qualifications are those that are internationally recognised...that way you can work all over the world. Qualifications such as VTCT, ITEC and Cibtac all offer this promise.

The VTCT course has now taken over from ITEC as a tutor’s favourite. It focuses more on the practical elements of beauty rather than too heavy a reliance on theory. Most students prefer the fact that it relies on ongoing assessment rather than one final pass or fail exam.

If you decide to go ahead with a college course be prepared to check what the course entails. Whilst studying for both Massage and Beauty together will maximise your employment opportunities, if you have your sights set on working in a nail bar then a VTCT Diploma in Nail Care is adequate to get you going. You can always go back and add on additional modules at a later date if you want to expand your skill set.

Most importantly don’t be despondent about the current Covid situation. Where there is a will there is a way.
The demand for professional Beauty Services will continue to remain strong and this promises real  opportunities for newly qualified therapists. To find out more about how you can gain entry to this exciting world go to www.juleacademy.ie
